Canadian singer Alanis Morrisette took the citizenship oath during a ceremony last week at the Los Angeles Convention Center. However, she reassured her fans in Canada that she's maintaining dual citizenship. "I consider myself a Canadian-American," Alanis declared.
When it came time for the national anthem, Alanis Morissette said, "I wanted to walk up to one of the officials to ask if I could sing the anthem."
Alanis Morrisette was born in Ottawa. After winning a Juno Award for Most Promising Female, she relocated to Los Angeles in 1994. In 1996, Alanis Morrisette was nominated for six Grammys. Shortly after the nominations, Morissette released her fourth single, "Ironic," which proved to be her biggest crossover success.
Alanis Morissette won several Grammy awards in 1996, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year.
Alanis Morissette's most recent album "So-Called Chaos" (2004) is quite a romance-heavy record due to Alanis' romance with Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, perhaps best known as the title role of National Lampoon's Van Wilder.
