Stylish Report: SPIN Gallery Unveils First-Ever Costume Collection

SPIN Gallery invites Torontonians to enjoy a unique, interactive art and fashion exhibit, featuring Toronto social columnist Rolyn Chamber’s most-photographed, hand-made costumes as part of Fashion Week festivities this March 14-20.

Rolyn Chambers is well known in the Toronto fashion scene for his personally designed outfits, which he wears while reporting on events and parties, and for his interview technique using toy tape recorders.

“From covering events as a reporter to becoming one of the personalities attending the events, Rolyn has created a name for himself and has a huge fan base that extends beyond the loyal readers of his column in fab Magazine,” says Stewart H. Pollock, co-founder of SPIN Gallery. “We are thrilled to be the first to showcase Rolyn’s sense of humour, attention to detail and his artistic design flare in Toronto.”

From his Bling-Bling Fashion Cares outfit of 2003 to his Sexy Sushi Seller costume worn to North Bound Leather’s Bento Party last year, to his Winter Wonderland creation worn to Bloor Street Entertains, the exhibit will showcase Almax Mannequins wearing twenty of his best (and maybe some of his wildest) fashion creations mixing today’s hottest fashion labels like Puma, and Hoax Couture with select vintage pieces discovered at Value Village.

From vintage classics to contemporary favourites, over 50 toy tape recorders will be featured in the display, as they are essential, FUNctional parts of his costumes. Visitors to SPIN Gallery will be invited to interact with the installation by listening to quotes from interviews with international celebrities and recording their own quotes, mock interviews and comments.

Renowned Canadian artist Christopher Estridge and recording artist Bryan Van Dusen, who make up the design house Ghetto Panda, will be styling and signing two of these fun toy tape recorders as Gala Door Prizes for the Gala Night Party. “Using toy tape recorders has been a great way to break the ice with celebrities,” says Rolyn Chambers. “The toy tape recorders conjure up happy childhood memories, which celebrities often share with me “off-the-record” and help me get the interview that I am looking for.”

The STYLISH REPORT will feature a selection of sound clips from interviews with actors, musicians, interviewed local and international personalities including Avril Lavigne, Pamela Anderson, Sir Ian McKellen, Kim Stockwell, Joely Fisher, Neve Campbell, Phillip Bloch, Hilary Swank, Woody Harrelson, Christina Ricci, Harry Rosen, Sean Paul, Linda Evangelista, Amanda Marshall, Esthero, Patti LaBelle, Tori Amos, The Opera Babes, The Designer Guys, The Ashmore Twins, Gino Vannelli, Jeanne Beker, Carla Collins, Gale Harold, Rex Harrington, Victor Calderone, Mayor David Miller, Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman and Conservative Party Leader Stephen Harper.

The STYLISH REPORT Gala party will take place at Spin Gallery at 1100 Queen St West (at Dovercourt Road) on Friday, March 18 from 7:00 pm to midnight with performances by Lena Love, Miss Butter, MC Texass, PURR Project, The Sketchie Puff Girls and the sounds of DJ Shane Percy.

The STYLISH REPORT is sponsored by SPIN Gallery, Puma, Value Village, Almax Mannequins and Display Items, fab Magazine and Chupa Chups.

SPIN Gallery was founded in April 2000 in Toronto by artist Juno Youn and professional artist management Stewart H. Pollock. SPIN Gallery’s aim is to promote Canadian artists and, in doing so, to build a bridge with the international art scene. SPIN Gallery presents intriguing new artists while continuing to promote the artists it has helped establish. The acronym SPIN is drawn from sculpture, painting, photography, installation and new media.
